F.A. Seleznev, B.L. Ginzburg, O.P. Morozova. Balakhna or Nizhny Novgorod? On the birthplace of Kuzma Minin.
The article deals with the debatable issue of the origin of Kuzma Minin, one of the main organizers of the Nizhny Novgorod militia of 1611-1612. The authors analyze the main versions existing in historiography: Nizhny Novgorod, Novgorod and Balakhna. Based on the study of sinodiks, scribe books and other sources, a new argumentation is proposed in favor of the Balakhna origin of Minin’s father — Mina Redozubov. Special attention is paid to genealogical connections reflected in the commemorative records and to the nickname «Sukhoruk», which could have replaced the ancestral family name.

Yu.A. Sorokin, T.A. Belova, A.L. Britskaya, A.A. Kozlova. Favoritism as a socio-cultural and political phenomenon during the period of absolutism.
Favoritism is a phenomenon that emerged in the late Middle Ages and early modern period, but still persists in modern society. According to the generally accepted understanding, favoritism is a partiality toward a favorite, on the one hand, and a desire to exploit one’s privileged position for one’s own benefit, on the other. What explains the emergence and persistence of this phenomenon? Firstly, the king initially needed people willing to share the burdens of governing the state, the weight of power and responsibility. Secondly, in the era of absolutism, the state became identified with the monarch, with service to him taking on the appearance of a cult. Thirdly, favoritism and favorites evoked mixed feelings among contemporaries, ranging from envy to hatred. The article notes that there were periods in history when the emergence of favorites was entirely justified, for example, during the minority, illness, or insolvency of the sovereign, but in most cases, they emerged as part of the system of absolutist government, both in European countries and in Russia. As is well known, Catherine the Great is credited with the greatest number of favorites in Russian history, but not all researchers agree with this assertion, and authors present different positions on this matter. The 19th century changed the history of favoritism, because once the bureaucratic apparatus was formed and its structure was established, favorites no longer had the opportunity to intervene and influence the sovereign’s policies as they had previously. However, overall, the phenomenon itself has proven remarkably resilient, persisting even in modern society.

N.N. Lydin. The problem of World War II chronology and including the Asian theater of operations in it.
In modern historiography, there are various approaches to defining the chronological framework of World War II. The traditional historical school connect its beginning with Germany’s attack on Poland on September 1, 1939. At the same time, other points of view can be found, according to which the war began much earlier — with Japan’s full-scale invasion of China in July 1937 or even in 1931. This article analyzes the arguments of proponents of different positions, including military-strategic, political, and economic aspects. It examines the contemporary coverage of this issue in educational literature and periodicals.

M.S. Ilyin, A.V. Khorosheva. The collapse of the USSR and its impact on Russian football.
The article examines the impact of the disintegration processes in the USSR in the second half of the 1980s and the early 1990s on Russian football. In the course of the study it has been established that football became an instrument of political struggle, in which the republican authorities used it to demonstrate their political independence from the union centre. In particular, the withdrawal of the Georgian and Baltic football teams from the single USSR football championship in 1989-1990 preceded the official secession of Georgia and the Baltic states from the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian football and political authorities repeatedly made attempts to create a single football space on the territory of the CIS based on new principles. However, this process was hindered by the fears of the local elites and the radicalism of football fans, despite the economic and sporting potential of such cooperation.
