Actual theme: General history course in school

V.A. Zemlyanitsin. Study of family and family relations issues in the course of the medieval history in the secondary school.
The article discusses the coverage of various aspects of the history of a medieval family and related issues in school textbooks of the second half of the 20th — first quarter of the 21st centuries. The author identified the main trends in the development of this issue and proposed variants for tasks aimed at forming students sociocultural ideas about the features of a medieval family and family values.

D.S. Matveev. The formation of the concept of «capitalism» among students of the seventh grade in the framework of studying the course of general history of the early Modern period.
The article is devoted to the problem of the formation of the concept of «capitalism» among students of the seventh grade in the study of the universal history of Modern times. The author presents a number of educational tasks that contribute to the formation of a system of concepts related to the topic of the emergence of capitalism and the development of the skill of defining them according to the rules of formal logic.

History and Society

G.G. Pikov. Why did the Franks become a nation, but the Khitans did not?
This article provides a comparative analysis of the history of two of the largest medieval peoples in Eurasia, who lived at the same time and created the largest states, but left different traces in subsequent history. These are the Franks, who created the vast «barbarian» Carolingian Empire in the 8th century, and the Chitans, who founded one of the great nomadic empires of the Liao (Silver, 907-1124). An attempt is made to explain this phenomenon by analyzing the features of the civilizational development of Europe and East Asia at the beginning of the second millennium. The specific ethnopolitical situation of the region is also being considered. Both of these states emerged at the apogee of the development of the medieval world, and their fate clearly demonstrated that further development along this path was impossible.

D.A. Shapovalenko. The role and place of the Streltsy in society 16th-17th centuries.
This article analyzes the role and place of the streltsy in russian society in the late medieval and early modern period. This approach aims to better understand the role of this class in the events of the 16th-17th centuries. The author deliberately overlooks the participation of the Streltsy in the military campaigns of the last Rurik dynasty and the first Romanov dynasty, citing the ample and detailed coverage of this topic in modern literature. However, it is precisely the everyday life of the Streltsy that allows for a more complete understanding not only of the military branch but also of a full-fledged military service group.

The article analyzes the fascist movement in Switzerland. It identifies its centers and key figures, and explains the reasons for its rise in the 1930s and subsequent decline.

V.D. Anisimov, V.L. Danoyan. Organization and implementation of research work on the introduction of physical education in production in the USSR during the first five-year plans.
The article analyses the formation of scientific and research work at production facilities during the implementation of the second five-year plan. The aim of the article is to analyse the policy of the Soviet government to increase the productivity of labour at enterprises, to solve the problems of improving the health of Soviet workers in the context of the activities of research institutes. Modern methods, including scientific approaches, were used to achieve the set questions. The research work was carried out on the basis of the plant named after ‘October Revolution’ and had to reveal the means that would allow to solve the set tasks.

A.O. Aksenichev. Right turn in Germany and its impact on the EU’s policy
The German federal elections in February 2025 showed changes in the balance of power, as the far-right Alternative for Germany party took second place for the first time in the history of the federal republic, and the newly elected chancellor broke a long-standing taboo by signaling his willingness to cooperate with it. Germany, driven by more conservative views, can form coalitions with right-wing northern and central European countries, bypassing lengthy negotiations at the EU level. The result could be the emergence of two major European blocs; one led by Germany, and the other by France and Italy.

A.V. Ryabinkin. Provision of military aid by the USSR to the Spanish Republican government in 1936-1939.
The article comprises an overview of historiography on the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the military assistance offered to the Republican government and the Nationalists by foreign countries. This review includes a comparative analysis of historical studies, collections of documents, monographs, dissertations, and articles. The author examines the essence and conceptual foundations of historical research conducted by domestic and foreign historians, as well as official documents related to this topic.

I.Yu. Zaya. The methodological potential of historical science in the practice of teaching the course «Fundamentals of Russian statehood»
The article examines questions that students frequently encounter while studying the course «Fundamentals of Russian Statehood». Drawing on own teaching experience at the HSE University, the author suggests deliberately addressing key aspects of historical methodology and focusing more on developing critical thinking and historical imagination skills, essential for successfully mastering «Fundamentals of Russian Statehood».

E.K. Kalutskaya, O.A. Ananyeva. Methodological designer of the patriotic component: on the example of the section «Politics» in the social studies course for grade 9
The development trends of Russian society at the present stage have brought to the forefront the problem of patriotism as one of the most important qualities of a citizen, especially a young one, which is reflected in the Federal State Educational Standards of Basic General Education and Individual Entrepreneurs. The authors of the publication noted the importance of including a patriotic component in the content of social studies classes in the 9th grade. The article presents examples of some tasks of the «methodological constructor» developed on the basis of the Concept of «10 Facets of Patriotism». The results of testing the tasks of the patriotic component of the lesson are also shown.

In 2025 the publishing house «Sobranie» released a collection of works by Doctor of History and Professor O. V. Volobuev, titled «Anthology». The current article reflects on the biography of this outstanding Russian historian and educator, and offers analysis of innovative propositions contained in the work collection of «Anthology». Special emphasis has been put on the materials relevant for History teachers.

Young scientists’ works

G.V. Uvarov. The First Congress of People’s Deputies of the RSFSR: the decision to liquidate the system of popular control in Russia.
This article examines the decision of the First Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian SFSR (June 1990) to liquidate the system of people’s control in Russia. The author analyzes the positions expressed at the Congress by people’s deputies who advocated both the abolition and the preservation of people’s control. The article devotes particular attention to the examination of the conditions in which the decision on elimination was made, as well as the position of the USSR People’s Control Committee, which had no choice but to accept the adopted decision.

M.A. Afanasyeva, A.M. Aseyeva, N.A. Naumov. Cultural Diplomacy of the USSR during the Great Patriotic War.
This article examines the role of Soviet cultural diplomacy as a means of combating Nazi Germany during the Great Patriotic War. The activities of such Soviet cultural diplomacy actors as the Sovinformburo, TASS, and VOKS during the war are analyzed. It is concluded that these organizations paved the way for the advancement of the Soviet information and socio-humanitarian agenda on the global stage.
